Chapter 57
Rowan watched helplessly as the light in Sienna’s eyes dimmed with every passing second. He wanted to say something to ease the tension, but in the end, he swallowed his words.
He had found out about it earlier that morning. He just hadn’t expected Clayton to be so ruthless as to deliver the most fatal blow right when Sienna was the happiest.
All color drained from Sienna’s face. Her fingers were clenched around the offer letter so tightly that they trembled. The edges of the paper crumpled under her grip.
She opened her mouth to argue, but an image suddenly flashed through her mind. She recalled the dark green suit she had glimpsed in passing. No wonder that figure looked so familiar.
As if that weren’t enough, Clayton twisted the knife further. “If you really want to work, I can arrange for you to work at Hale Group. Don’t go outside and embarrass yourself.”
“No need.” Sienna cut him off.
Her eyes burned, but she forced the tears back. Grabbing her bag, she turned and rushed toward the elevator.
Ten minutes ago, she had been a proud peacock. Now, Clayton’s words were like a bucket of icy water that drenched her from head to toe, leaving her a miserable, soaked mess.
After the elevator doors closed, Rowan swallowed and finally worked up the courage to speak. “Mr. Hale, what you said was a
bit harsh.”
Clayton folded his arms, utterly unconcerned. “She needs to learn her limits. She’s too naïve in thinking that she can just carve out a path for herself in the world.”
Rowan muttered under his breath, “But you didn’t have to break it to her right when she was the happiest…”
Clayton shot him a sideways glance. “What? Are you feeling sorry for her?”
Rowan immediately shook his head furiously, desperate to save his own skin.
Sienna walked out of Hale Group Tower with her head lowered, as if all the energy had been drained from her body. Even her steps felt unsteady.
Was she really that useless? She had done so much to prepare for that interview. She had genuinely tried hard. But in the end, her achievement had still turned out to be someone else’s charity.
She didn’t want to believe it.
Sienna recalled the look in Neriah’s eyes during the interview. That look of recognition hadn’t felt forced. Maybe Clayton was lying to her.
Clinging to that last sliver of hope, Sienna went straight to Winger Group.
Compared to Hale Group’s sleek, luxurious interior, Winger Group’s office felt dull. The gray–and–black marble floors reflected Sienna’s pale face.
“Hello, I’d like to see Mr. Winger,” she said in a hoarse voice.
The receptionist looked up. “Do you have an appointment?”
“I’m his sister, Sienna.”
A flicker of surprise crossed the receptionist’s face. She only knew that Ethan Winger had a younger sister named Olive, who

was still in college and would often come by to ask for money. She had never heard about him having another sister.
Still, professionalism won out. She dialed the internal line and said, “Mr. Winger, there’s a Ms. Sienna here to see you.”
There was a brief moment of silence on the other end before a curt reply came. “Send her up.”
Sienna took the elevator and stopped in front of the office door. She lifted her hand to knock.
“Come in,” a deep male voice called from inside.
She pushed the door open. Ethan stood at the floor–to–ceiling window, with his back to her and one hand in his pocket. He stood tall and straight, yet there was an unshakable sense of loneliness to his silhouette.
Hearing her footsteps, he slowly turned around.
As they locked eyes, Sienna got straight to the point. “I applied to Jierre Studios. Did you interfere with it?”
Ethan looked at her quietly. “Yes.”
That single word shattered her last illusion.
So Clayton was right after all. She really was someone with no real ability and could only get in through the back door.
Sienna could no longer hide how upset she was.
Her tone was cutting as she demanded, “Who gave you the right to meddle in my life? Even if I failed the interview, that would have been my problem! You didn’t even bother to ask me before pulling strings. Do you think that makes you some kind of hero? Should I kneel and thank you for your kindness?”
Ethan lowered his gaze. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to help you.”
Sienna’s voice rose an octave. “Help me? Keep your goodwill to yourself. When I really needed your help back then, how did you treat me? Now you have the nerve to talk about helping me.”
She pulled out the offer letter from her bag and tore it to shreds right in front of him. Then, she flung the pieces at his chest.
The paper fluttered down like snowflakes. A few scraps landed on Ethan’s shoulder, but he didn’t move.
Sienna warned coldly, “Stay away from me from now on. If you dare interfere in my life again, I won’t hold back when dealing with you.”
