Chapter 78

Tristan’s eyes widened. He was so angry that he laughed, releasing Genevieve’s wrist.

Without saying another word, he turned around and walked into his room.

Genevieve stood rooted to the spot. She could still feel his lingering warmth on her wrist.

As she looked at the tightly shut door, she felt irritated.

He was such a strange man!

Sneering, she decided to put this episode behind her.

Over the next few days, the air in the apartment was thick with tension. Genevieve and Tristan didn’t exchange a single word or communicate at all.

Tristan left early and returned late, while Genevieve poured all her energy into making perfumes and working on her

painting.

They occasionally passed each other in the hallway in the early mornings or late at night. Yet they were like strangers living under the same roof. They didn’t disturb each other at all.

One day, when Genevieve was working on the final base note for her new perfume for the Rebirth series, Hannah knocked on the door and walked in.

“Gen, Sylvia called again. This is the fifth time this week.” Annoyance was written all over Hannah’s face as she continued, “I hung up immediately, but she didn’t seem like she had any intention of giving up.”

Genevieve didn’t stop working, drawing a drop of ambergris and dropping it into the beaker.

She didn’t even look up as she asked, “What did she say?”

“What else can she say? It’s always the same thing. She said she wanted to meet you and that everything that happened between you and Zachary is a misunderstanding,” Hannah replied.

Pouting, she added, “Zachary is behind bars, so Tristan is calling all the shots at Lambert Group now. She must be feeling uneasy about her position as the lady of the Lambert family. She probably wanted to ask you to show them mercy.”

Genevieve sneered and looked at the liquid in the beaker as she swirled it gently.

Sylvia wanted her to show them mercy? Why hadn’t Zachary ever thought of showing her mercy when he hired a hit on her? Had he shown Heron mercy when he used the Yates family’s secret to threaten him?

“Just block her number,” Genevieve ordered calmly.

“Alright!” said Hannah.

Just as she was about to turn around, her phone rang again. It was an unfamiliar number.

Glancing at it, she frowned and said, “Gen, it’s from the law firm.”

Genevieve felt a sudden stir in her heart before she said, “Answer it.”

Hannah put the call on speaker, and a man’s voice came through.

“Am I speaking to Ms. Genevieve Whitfield? This is Matthew Zarrett from Clearstead Law Firm. On behalf of Ms. Sylvia Jenkins, I would like to inform you of some recent updates on my client, Mr. Zachary Lambert,” said Matthew.

Genevieve set the beaker down and wiped her hand. She leaned against the side of the laboratory table and gestured for

Hannah to keep quiet.

“Mr. Lambert’s mental state has been extremely unstable after he was sent to jail. He has developed severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. He couldn’t get accustomed to the environment in jail. He’s been having trouble eating and sleeping, and he has lost 22 pounds in half a month.

“The guards caught him trying to harm himself multiple times. Just the night before last, he sliced his wrist with the sharpened handle of his toothbrush. Fortunately, he was found in time, so there weren’t any fatal consequences,” said

Matthew.

He paused, seemingly trying to give Genevieve some time to digest all that information.

Hannah’s jaw fell as she listened to him, and she instinctively looked at Genevieve.

Genevieve, however, remained expressionless. There wasn’t even the slightest hint of emotion on her face.

It was just an act. Who was he trying to put on a show for?

“Ms. Whitfield.” Matthew’s voice sounded again. “Ms. Jenkins hopes you can see that Mr. Lambert has already paid a hefty price for his impulsive actions. Days feel like years to him right now, and he’s almost on the verge of a mental breakdown.

“Ms. Jenkins sincerely asks whether you would be willing to write a letter of forgiveness. Or perhaps would you consider visiting Mr. Lambert once, just to give him a little hope to continue living?”

“Are you done?” Genevieve finally asked.

Matthew seemed taken aback and paused before he said, “Yes.”

“Please pass a message to Sylvia and Zachary then.” Genevieve spoke slowly, enunciating her words. “He deserves to have his days feel like years. If he’s having a mental breakdown, it’s the consequences of his own actions.”

With a sneer, she added, “As for giving him hope to continue living, that’s his own business. What’s it got to do with me?”
