Chapter 70

Heron said, “It’s not just a simple key. It’s enough to destroy the Yates family for good.”

He pointed at the plaque at the center of the mausoleum.

“The traitor that your mother discovered was Soren Yates, my nephew. He colluded with Alex Lambert, the previous head of the family, and Sloane Pharmaceuticals.

“They used the Yates family’s ancient formulas to create a novel neurotoxin. It was odorless and colorless, yet it could easily take over someone’s mind. If such a thing were sold to the public, there would be dire consequences.

“Zoe discovered their records of their experiments and hid them inside the treasure trove. She thought that if she took the Seeker’s Twinstone, she could protect the evidence and force us to back down. But she underestimated Soren’s cruelty and overestimated the family elders‘ courage.”

Heron’s face was etched with hatred as he continued, “We were afraid that the whole Yates family would be implicated, so we

chose to handle it like cowards.

“Soren, on the other hand, wanted to get rid of the root of the problem and claim the treasure trove for himself. So he put a hit on her!”

So that was the truth.

Genevieve dug her nails into her palms, hatred churning in her gut.

She asked, “So, the evidence is inside the treasure trove?”

Heron nodded. “It’s still there. But the location of the treasure trove is passed down by each head of the family through word

of mouth-“I

Suddenly, a loud crash sounded.

Someone had rammed into the heavy black door of the mausoleum. Splinters of wood and dust flew into the air.

More than ten figures dressed in black rushed into the hall. They moved quickly and with great skill, each of them holding a dagger that glinted in the dim light.

The leader of the pack wore a black windbreaker and stood firmly in front. He slowly looked up.

Genevieve was shocked. “Zachary?”

Zachary gave her a glance before looking at Heron with a greedy look in his eyes. Then, he diverted his gaze to the Seeker’s Twinstone in Genevieve’s hands.

“Genevieve, I have to thank you for doing so much work for me.”

A man walked out from behind him. He was one of the people in charge of Sloane Pharmaceuticals‘ business in the country.

He adjusted his glasses and said politely, “Mr. Yates, our boss is extremely interested in the Yates family’s ancient formulas. We would like to invite you over for a cup of tea. Of course, we would like the key in Ms. Whitfield’s hands as well.”

“In your dreams!” Heron trembled with fury. He took the pestle next to him and stood in front of Genevieve, taking a protective stance. “Fuck off, you bastards!”

Zachary merely sniggered, his eyes full of disdain. “An old man like you should really learn when to take the easy way out. Since you’re set on making things hard for yourself, you leave me no choice.”

He waved a hand, ordering, “Strike now! Take the key and get rid of them! Remember to make it look like the Yates family had an internal conflict about the family’s heirlooms, and they ended up killing each other when things got out of hand.”

He wanted all the blame to fall squarely on Genevieve’s shoulders.

Two figures in black lunged at Heron.

“Look out!” Genevieve pushed Heron out of the way and grabbed a heavy mortar from the table. She swung it down on one man’s head without any hesitation.

The man fell to the floor with a thud.

The other thug thrust his dagger toward Genevieve’s chest.

She lithely dodged the dagger, twisting her body at an unnatural angle and stomping on the thug’s knee.

The thug knelt on the floor, howling in pain.

In just a matter of seconds, Genevieve had defeated the two professional fighters.

Zachary’s expression fell. “It seems like I underestimated you. All of you–move together and destroy her!”

The mausoleum wasn’t big, and Genevieve’s back was already against the table of ancestral plaques.

Another figure in black took advantage of the situation and aimed his dagger at Heron from a specific angle.

In an effort to protect Heron, Genevieve moved to the side. She dodged the attack, but her arm was cut open by the dagger, leaving a deep wound and blood all over her sleeve.
