Chapter 69

Genevieve said, “I came for this.”

Heron stared at the complete emerald bracelet and froze. He opened the door, wanting to snatch it from her.

But Genevieve was on high alert. She quickly flipped her hand over, dodging his move.

“Who are you?” Heron trembled in agitation. “How can the complete Seeker’s Twinstone be in your hands? Who did you steal it from?”

“Steal?” Genevieve chuckled. “This was the only thing my mother, Zoe Yates, left for me.”

Heron looked at Genevieve in disbelief, unable to form a single sentence.

He could only stammer, “W–what did you just say? You’re Z–Zoe’s d–daughter?”

He scrutinized Genevieve’s face, as if he were looking for a resemblance between her and Zoe.

“You look so much like her, especially your eyes…” Heron muttered under his breath.

The animosity in his eyes started to fade. He took a step back in resignation, letting Genevieve enter.

“Come in.”

There was a calming scent in the old building.

Heron poured a cup of tea for Genevieve. “What did Greg tell you?”

Genevieve held the cup in her hand, but she didn’t drink from it. She just wanted to feel the warmth on her palm.

She replied, “He said that my mother was a genius in the Yates family and also his brother’s mentor. She was hunted down by some traitors, so she split the emerald bracelet into two and gave one half to his brother to look after.”

Heron chuckled, but the sound was full of mockery. “Your mother was indeed a genius. Greg wasn’t wrong about the traitors

as well.”

Then, he looked straight at Genevieve and continued, “But your mother was known for something else in our family records –she was an abandoned daughter of the family.”

Genevieve’s grip on her cup tightened. “Why?”

“You dare to ask me why?” Heron smacked the table fiercely, and the medicinal jars in the hall shook.

“She didn’t abide by the family rules! She wanted to destroy the Yates family!”

Heron grew more and more angry as he spoke. “The Yates family preached that doctors should be benevolent, but there are some things that we can never do! The secret medicine our family possesses is enough to shake the country’s foundation! We can never let them come to light.

“But she wanted to study them! She felt that it could help save many people. Not once did she consider how many people would die if things got out of control!

“She disregarded everyone’s objections and secretly decoded half of the Seeker’s Twinstone’s secrets. She even managed to discover proof that 30 years ago, some people in the Yates family collaborated with others for their own benefit. They smuggled poisonous herbs and refined prohibited medicine!”

Genevieve was barely breathing by then.

The Lambert family’s smuggling case was indeed related to the Yates family!

“Since she had evidence, she wanted us to announce our wrongdoings to the public!” Heron’s voice shook. “If she did that,

the Yates family would have been ruined! She would have destroyed the family’s centuries–old legacy and killed thousands of people! She failed to understand that.”

Genevieve’s voice was chilly as she questioned, “So all of you just kicked her out of the family?”

Heron didn’t try to hide it. “Yes, we did! We gave her two choices–it was either she destroyed the evidence, or we would kick her out of the Yates family and disown her. She chose the latter.

“She thought that after she took the Seeker’s Twinstone, she could threaten us and that things would change. She was too naive!

“How could those bastards involved in the smuggling case let her off easily? The moment she left our protection, she became a walking target! The people who were after her weren’t just foreign buyers; some of them were traitors of the Yates family.”

A hint of agony flashed across Heron’s face.

“I never thought that she would leave a trail for you. She even managed to hide the Seeker’s Twinstone so well.”

Genevieve finally saw the clear picture. Her mother hadn’t been hunted down by mere enemies. She had been alone as she fought against the bad apples of the family and those who only valued themselves.

She hadn’t been running away; she had been resisting.

Genevieve said slowly, “The Seeker’s Twinstone is a key to opening the Yates family’s treasure trove.”
