Chapter 42

Right after Genevieve hung up on Jonathan, her phone began to ring again.

She picked up the call and heard Wilson’s voice. “Mrs. Lambert! Please help! Mr. Lambert Senior suffered another attack when he saw the news! Please come back and visit him!”

All of the housekeepers in the Lambert residence had their heads bowed. None of them dared to even breathe too loudly.

Zachary was already there when Genevieve stepped into their living room.

He had his back toward the door and was standing stiffly. The collar of his shirt was crooked and slanted. He looked almost pitifully hopeless.

When he heard her footsteps, he looked back and glared at her with bloodshot eyes.

“How dare you come here!” he said in a hoarse voice full of hatred.

Genevieve looked past him. Her gaze landed on the tightly closed master bedroom door on the

second floor.

He clenched his fists tightly. “Genevieve!”

“Mr. Lambert, please watch your temper,” Jonathan said, stepping in front of Genevieve. “Mr. Lambert Senior is still upstairs.”

That simple sentence put out all of the fury that Zachary was feeling.

All he could do was watch as Genevieve went upstairs.

Raymond lay weakly on his bed with an oxygen mask over his nose and mouth. The monitor near his bed let out simple, regular beeps.

He was once a regal man who could control many things with the wave of his hand. Now, he looked frail and weak, as if a gust of wind could blow him away.

When he saw Genevieve, he began squirming to lift a hand.

Genevieve approached him and gently held his hand down. “Grandpa, please rest.‘

“Gen…” Raymond’s frail, muffled voice called out to her from under his mask. “P–Please… don’t leave. I’m begging you.”

He struggled to breathe as he said, “Zachary, that bastard… I’ll make him cut that woman out

It was the last card he had up his sleeve, and it was also the biggest step he was willing to take for Genevieve, for the sake of the Lambert family.

Genevieve listened to him quietly. Her eyes softened for just a moment as if she was willing to give in, but her gaze hardened again just as quickly.

She shook her head.

“No, thank you, Grandpa,” she said, taking a brown envelope from Jonathan. She didn’t open it. Instead, she simply placed it on Raymond’s bedside table. “Just take a look at this.”

Raymond looked at her in confusion. With a quivering hand, he gestured for one of the housekeepers in the room to open it for him.

There was a stack of bank statements showing transfers to an overseas account. Apart from that, there were a few documents showing proof of asset transfers.

Every single transfer was from Lambert Group to some unknown foreign dummy company.

Raymond’s breathing grew erratic. His eyes widened in disbelief as he read through all the documents and statements. His hands trembled as they clutched onto the papers.

He thought Zachary was just a fool in love, but he never imagined that his grandson would do something so despicable behind his and the entire Lambert family’s back.

“How… How dare he!”

The ECG monitor suddenly started beeping loudly.

“Doctor? Doctor!” the nurse yelled.

Genevieve, however, was strangely calm. She simply raised a hand and lightly patted Raymond’s heaving chest.

“Grandpa,” she said, leaning down. “This has nothing to do with Regina or Tristan. This was Zachary’s decision all along. Don’t worry. I’ll find a way to save the Lambert family.”

The beeping slowly faded away.

After a long moment, Raymond closed his eyes slowly, as if his energy had been sucked out of him. Tears began falling from the corners of his eyes.

He waved a hand in silent agreement.

Zachary, who had been standing outside the entire time, saw everything as it went down.

When he saw Raymond closing his eyes and waving a hand, he knew that he had lost the only person he could have relied on.

Anger immediately overtook his rationality.
