MLUNGHISI

“What’s stressing you? You’ve been like this since I got here. ” Justice is here. He came almost an hour ago. But my mind is not here. It’s far away. I’ve been thinking about what Risuna’s friend said. It’s giving me sleepless nights. It’s all I think about. What if Risuna wakes up one day and says she made a mistake by being with me?

“Risuna’s friend said that Risuna deserves better. She says I’m not good enough for her. “

“Stop doing this to yourself. Risuna loves you. She’s an adult who can make up her mind.” I know that but it doesn’t stop me from worrying. I am more than worried. Everything that friend said makes sense.

“What if she’s right? What if I’m delaying her from living her life by being with her? Maybe if we were not together she would have long moved back to the city. Don’t you think?”

“Since when do you doubt yourself? Risuna knows you. She knows that you can’t offer her soft life but you can do anything to take care of her. She knows that you can provide her and give her love. That’s what matters. Even her parents gave you their blessings because they trust you. So don’t let that friend of hers get into your head and mess things up for you. I hope you’re not going to end things because of that friend. Don’t let anyone mess up with your relationship.”

“Talk to your girlfriend. You need to warn her about this devil trying to destroy what you two have worked so hard to build.”

“No. It’s not necessary. “

It’s now in the evening and I just came back with Risuna. I went to fetch her. I wonder how she managed to convince her friend to stay at home. She wanted to come with us. Who goes with their friend to their boyfriend to sleep there? I’m totally convinced that there’s a loose screw in her head. But for now I’m going to forget about it.

I open the door and we walk in. She stops and looks at me. I smile. This is what I want to see. That smile on her face. It makes me happy. It makes me see that she’s not settling for me. She’s here because she loves me and wants to be here.

She wraps her hands around my waist and kisses me. I lead her to where she’s supposed to sit. She sits down and I go to the kitchen to get our food. I went all out. I know how to cook and I’m good at it even if i say so myself. I put everything down and open the plates.

I decorated our little place into a romantic set up. I want this to be memorable. I want this day to be one to remember. I give her flowers and she closes her eyes and inhales. The look that I’m seeing now is all I want to see for the rest of our lives. She looks so beautiful and happy.

After eating I get dessert for us. This one I didn’t make it myself. I bought it. By the way she’s closing her eyes when eating she’s enjoying herself. I take out the earings I got for her while her eyes are still closed. It’s amazing how I never thought I’d do something like this before meeting her.

When she opens her eyes her mouth hangs open. She giggles then puts the spoon down.

“Baby! They’re so beautiful! Thank you.” She takes the earrings, her smile still there.

“I’m glad you love them.”

I do as she says as she takes pictures. My woman loves taking pictures. Every moment is suitable for a picture. Whenever she takes pictures of us she sends them to me. Her phone takes beautiful pictures.

“I instantly became full! Now I can’t finish my dessert. Baby these earrings are so beautiful!” I have even forgotten about telling her about her friend. I don’t want to ruin this moment.

I raise her head so that she can look at me. I kiss her and get up with her,going to the bed. When my hands go under her top and she doesn’t stop me I continue. I wanted this day to be special. The day I make love to her.

I walk into the room with her bathing water. I put it down and get onto the bed. I open the sheets and wake her up.

“Baby,come and bath.” She yawns and opens her eyes. When they fall on mine she giggles.

“Ho are you feeling?”

“I’ll be fine.” I help her get into the washing dish. The house that I’m building will have a shower and a bathtub. We have taps in our own yards and electricity. So everything is going to be easy.

I take the sheets off and put new ones. I go out to wash the ones that I just changed. A smile finds its way to my face when I think of last night. I felt us connecting. It was not my first time but it was different. Different in every way. I felt the connection. The chemistry, the love, I felt all of it. We were one and it’s always going to be like that. I completely forgot about everything that was stressing me and focused on that moment.

After I’m done with the blankets I go and start with breakfast. I make eggs then put the polony and cheese on the plate. Peanut butter too. That’s her favorite. I put it all on the tray then go and help her get rid of the water. She still has clothes here. So she has something to change into.

After I’m done I get our food and take out a cold drink. I bought a fridge. I actually got everything that will make my woman’s life easier whenever she’s around.

We sit down and she prays for the food. That’s the thing with her. She’s a woman of prayer. Every time we eat she starts by praying.

“Thankk you for the breakfast. “

“It’s a pleasure. How are you feeling?”

“Better. Oh,I wanted to tell you something. I’m going on a vacation with Thandeka. I wish I could tell her that I won’t be joining her anymore so that we soend more time together. But she came here specially for me. “

“Do you really have to go?”

Yes,babe. Thandeka and i go a long time without seeing each other.”

“Okay. I understand. Babe, would you ever leave me?”

“What kind of question is that? Do you want to end our relationship?”

“No,not at all. I just want to know if you’re happy with me. I mean,I cannot afford to give you the life that you’re used to. “

“I don’t know why you’re suddenly feeling like this. You know I don’t care about those things. What matters is that you try. You work so hard to provide and that’s what matters. I don’t care about money and all those things. We have each other. That’s what’s important. ” That’s such a relief. Now I can forget about that friend who was trying to make me doubt myself. My love is happy and I’m happy.

RISUNA

I look at him and smile. I love this man so much. Last night was so beautiful. I didn’t know that my man is so romantic. The dinner,dessert and the earrings? It was the best night ever. Then we made love. My first time with the love of my life. It was the best night of my life.

I trace my hand on his beard and he takes my hand and kisses it. We are spending our day in bed. I will go back home in the evening.

Thandeka went to town. She said she needs to get something there. So I am not in a rush to go back home.

“What’s my baby thinking?”

“Nothing. I’m just counting my blessings. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

“Well,I can’t wait for you to be Mrs Ngobeni. Risuna Ngobeni. “

“I like the sound of that. It has a nice ring to it.”

I know it’s still earlly and we have a long way to go. But I know that he is the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

“Why am i the only odd one out?”I ask thandeka.

“What are you talking about? “

When I asked her about this vacation she said it’s just us and our friends from varsity. Now I am confused that this is a couple’s vacation. And there’s only one single guy. What was she hoping for? That I’d cheat on my man with this guy?

Thandeka knows that I am in a relationship. She knows that I love Mlunghisi. And she goes and does this. If her intentions were to make me angry then she’s succeeded. I am angry! What am I doing here? I need to get out of this place as soon as yesterday.

Thandeka and I have been friends since first year. I don’t know this person in front of me. I know her to be a nice person. Now she’s different. When I told her about Mlunghisi she was happy for me. Where did it go wrong? When did she change her feelings about our relationship?

“You know I have a boyfriend and you keep on pushing that guy onto me!”

“Boyfriend? Risuna you deserve better. That guy won’t take you anywhere. Are you now going to be a housewife? You are always going to be at home looking after goats and cows? You can do better than that!”

I can’t believe she’s saying this. She sounds ridiculous. This is my life and i know what i want! She can’t decide for me. She doesn’t know what i need. Actually, what i need is to get out of here right now.

“Okay,I’m sorry. Can we just enjoy our vacation? i will not try to get you and that guy together.”

I walkk out and go back to where I was sitting. That guy comes to sit next to me. Can he just go back to his place? I was fine on my own!

“Are you okay?” He’s still asking? Can’t he see how my face looks?

“Please, keep your hands to yourself. I don’t know what Thandeka told you but I am not interested. I don’t want to be part of whatever it is that you have planned.”

“You look good in that bikini.” Nxla.

“Tell your friend that I’m leaving. ” I get up and go back to the room and change. After changing I request a ride to town so i can get a taxi back home. This girl brought me all the way from home to this place to play matchmaker. She wanted to match me with that guy.

Luckily when i get to the rank taxis are still available. I buy something to eat on the way then wait for the taxi to get full. If it was under different circumstances I would have enjoyed my stay back. But she made my weekend so bad.

When we arrived at our town it was already late. I got another taxi to go home then called Mlunghisi to wait for me at the bus station after three hours. It’s Saturday and i was supposed to come back on Monday. But because my friend had plans of her own i am back.

When i get off the bus Mlunghisi comes close and takes my bag. We walk to his place quietly. It’s so dark. I wouldn’t have been able to walk alone here. I would be scared. Thee days I’m scared of being alone at night.

We get to his place and i change into my night dress.

“Weren’t you supposed to come back on Monday?” Did something happen? “

“Can you believe that Thandeka planned a couple’s vacation and invited me knowing that you were not going to be there? She says i deserve better. Imagine.” I take water and drink. I’m so angry at her.

“When some guy arrived today he was all over me. Sitting next to me and hugging me. Then it moved to him touching me. Then i realized what was happening because of the way he was speaking. I decided to leave. “He gives me his phone. I look at the texts and pictures.

“She sent those pictures to tell me that you deserve someone like that guy. I knew that her intentions were to make us fight. The first time you came with her she told me that I’m not good enough for you and I must leave you. She said i was poor and couldn’t afford you. That we were different. I didn’t think she’d also do something like this. Where did she even get my numbers?”

“I think she stole them from my phone. I’m just glad that i realized what was happening early. Who knows what would have happened to me there?”

“What matters is that you’re home safe. Would you like me to make you something to eat?”

“No,I’m fine. Let’s sleep. I’m tired.”

I still cannot believe what happened. I’m so angry at Thandeka. Is this really how she sees my partner? I can’t keep someone like that in my life. Our friendship has ended. I don’t ever want to see her again.
