Chapter 40

William was the one who had hurt Scarlet the most.

Scarlet couldn’t help but think about Nicole hiding behind him. “You can go protect Nicole instead.”

William’s expression darkened as he frowned. “If you want to get a divorce, leave her out of it.”

Why did he make it sound like Scarlet was being unreasonable? Was she the one who was practically jumping at the chance to get a divorce? Was she the one who was getting involved with her ex even though she was still married?

Whatever. She didn’t care. Scarlet had already lost the drive to argue with him.

“If that’s what makes you feel better, then go ahead.”

Her attitude annoyed William even more. It was like arguing with a wall. He was annoyed and wanted to let it out, but he had no one to argue with.

William tugged at his tie and scoffed. “You didn’t gain weight, but you did gain the ability to annoy me.”

But Scarlet had only held back before because she loved him. That was why she let him say whatever he wanted to her.

They fell silent for a moment. When the Bentley drove past Agrine Bridge, William asked, “Do you remember Lumine Mountain?”

Blaine had brought up a distant memory.

Back then, William had genuinely wanted to show Scarlet the meteor shower.

It was cold on the mountain, so he had wrapped his own jacket around her. She sat quietly in his lap, and for some reason, her skin was extra soft that day. She was enveloped in his warmth and scent.

He was a young, virile man, and his blood had rushed south almost immediately. No man would have been able to hold back.

His heart began to beat faster at the thought of what had happened on the mountain.

Suddenly, he felt like the divorce wasn’t necessary. It wasn’t as if he couldn’t stand her at all.

Scarlet leaned against the window and answered, “I don’t.”

Thus, William’s heart calmed down, like an ocean’s surface after a rough storm.

After a moment, he sighed, looking away from Scarlet. His expression was cold once again. “What exactly am I even expecting from you?”

The atmosphere in the car dropped rapidly. It was too cold, and even the heater couldn’t warm them up.

The car’s wide backseats seemed to split open in the middle, leaving a wide gap between them. They sat far apart like enemies who couldn’t stand the sight of each other.

Neither of them said anything else for the rest of the journey.

Lester was growing uneasy in the front seat. He’d found Lucy’s constant chatter annoying, but now that the car had fallen entirely silent, he felt even more uncomfortable.

When they reached Wolke Bay, Scarlet got out of the car, slamming her door shut, and began walking toward the house alone.

William didn’t follow her into the house. Instead, he stood by the car and flicked his lighter open. With a click, he lit the cigar between his lips.

He took a deep inhale and called out to her the moment the nicotine entered his system. “Scarlet.”

Scarlet stopped walking up the steps.
