Chapter 38

“Why are you looking at me like that? Are you throwing a tantrum over a small piece of cake?”

As he spoke, William lifted his hand. He gently tossed a barely bloomed pale pink rosebud onto her plate. The layers of petals emanated a gentle scent.

“This is for the cake. Is it enough?” he asked, looking down at Scarlet. “If it isn’t, I’ll pick more for you.”

Scarlet looked at the flower on her plate and fell silent for a moment. After a moment, she couldn’t hold back any longer.” You didn’t wash your hands.”

William fell silent. He gritted his teeth as he pinched Scarlet’s cheek. “I forgot about your germophobia, Dr. Benson.”

Nicole was chatting with some old friends whom she hadn’t seen in a while. She kept staring at William and watched as he walked back inside and chased away Blaine, noting the intimate way he had wrapped his arm around Scarlet’s waist.

Nicole’s eyes darkened. She excused herself and walked over to him, hiking her skirt up gently as she did so.

“Hey, Mr. Popular. Are you done with your call?” she asked playfully. “Everyone’s waiting for you to play pool.”

“Count me out,” William said. He turned to Scarlet. “Are you done? Let’s go home if you are.”

The smile on Nicole’s face vanished. “So soon? The party just started. Shaun and Silas have been looking for you for ages.”

“For what?” he asked. “I’m not their mother.”

Nicole knew just how self-centered he could be. After all, it was why they had argued back then. She was determined to win the argument, which was why they broke up in the first place.

If they hadn’t broken up, Scarlet wouldn’t have had a chance.

Since he wanted to leave, she knew no one could make him stay. Nicole didn’t say anything else. Instead, she reminded him, ” Then, remember to take your clothes with you. It’s still upstairs. I don’t think anyone had time to wash it.”

When she heard that, Scarlet stayed silent and tossed the pale pink rose on her plate into the trash can.

When William saw that, his gaze landed on the flower in the trash can for a moment as his gaze darkened. “Are you that quick to throw away my flower?”

Scarlet replied mildly, “It’s not mine. Why would I want to keep it?”

The flowers were from Nicole’s garden, and William belonged to Nicole, too. Scarlet didn’t want what didn’t belong to her.

William’s expression became cold. “Why are you throwing a tantrum?”

Tension was escalating between them. Nicole immediately stood in between them, playing the role of mediator. “William, why are you always so harsh toward Scarlet?”

She even explained to Scarlet, “Scarlet, It’s not what you think it is. Before you came, Shaun was playing around and sprayed me with champagne, but I dodged behind William, so the champagne got on his shirt instead. He went upstairs and changed into some extra clothes. Don’t take it the wrong way, okay?”

Scarlet looked at Nicole’s sincere expression. She could already picture Shaun chasing after Nicole and how she dodged behind William, who probably naturally defended her. With just a glance from William, Shaun would have stopped right away.

What a perfect image.

Nicole had probably only invited her to show off their relationship in front of her.

Good job. Scarlet had become a free witness to their love. Was there any other wife who would have obediently done such a thing?
