Chapter 36

Xyla leaped off the couch furiously and lunged toward Lucy. “How dare you!”

They immediately began fighting. Even though one of Xyla’s limbs was out of commission, she still put up a fierce fight.

The two women clawed and scratched at each other. Scarlet watched speechlessly before getting up and walking toward the catering table to pick out some food.

There were only cold foods laid out on the long table. Scarlet picked some out and placed them on her plate. A man next to her asked, “Do you have a sweet tooth?”

He was the one who had pinched the back of Scarlet’s hand just now.

However, without further evidence, Scarlet had no way of knowing whether or not he actually had bad intentions. She politely replied, “Yeah.”

She continued filling up her plate.

Blaine Wright stood next to her, unmoving. “You look even prettier than the last time I saw you, Ms. Benson.”

Scarlet couldn’t help but look at Blaine again, but she couldn’t remember ever seeing him before. “Have we met?”

“Yes, but it was a while back, so it’s fine if you don’t remember me,” Blaine said, smiling politely. “We met when you and Mr. Cooper were watching the meteor shower at Lumine Mountain.”

Scarlet remembered Lumine Mountain very well.

She and William had still been on good terms back then. The weather was starting to become warm, and one day, William brought up that the Perseid meteor shower was happening that night. Lumine Mountain was the best viewpoint, so he brought her up the mountain to camp there.

Scarlet did remember someone greeting William there, but it was just a brief interaction, so she didn’t remember much

about it.

She didn’t even remember much of the actual meteor shower. All she remembered was the mingling of their warm, wet breaths inside their spacious tent.

He had said he wanted to show her the meteor shower, but ended up pinning her down on the soft mattress inside their tent. They only realized the meteor shower was happening when they heard gasps and exclamations of awe coming from outside

their tent.

She pushed William lightly. “The meteor shower is here.”

William kissed the fine mist of sweat on her neck. “If you close your eyes now, you can make a wish.”

Scarlet didn’t have much to wish for, so she murmured, “I’ll wish for both of us to come to watch the meteor shower when it happens again.”

William hummed in response. “Then, I’ll wish for us to do this again the next time we watch the meteor shower.”

He practically breathed his wish into Scarlet’s ear, causing her ears to turn bright red as she smacked him. “What’s your problem?”

Her palm was soft, and there was barely any energy in her attack. To William, it felt like flirting.

William chuckled and kissed her gently. “You’re so easy to tease.”

In the end, she didn’t catch even a glimpse of the meteor shower. Since their original plan was to watch the meteor shower, they hadn’t brought any forms of protection, but William still…

Scarlet had been paranoid for a few days after that. She was terrified that something irreversible had taken place and only relaxed when her period started on time the next month.

Her ears burned bright red at the thought of their past shameful acts.

“What a coincidence,” she said, doing her best to act nonchalant as she picked up a small piece of cake.

Blaine stared at her red ears. His eyes glinted strangely as they began to travel downward, lingering on the curves below her

waist.

Scarlet didn’t notice anything since she was looking down, but William could see Blaine’s greedy stares perfectly from where he was standing in the garden.

He began to speak faster and more impatiently on the phone.

“He wants a way in with Bova Capital, but he’s also trying to get favors with the secretary’s nephew? He needs to remember his place. Tell Mr. Watson that I never settle for being the second choice. Either he makes us the lead underwriter and names a price I’m satisfied with, or we’ll stop working with him.”

He then hung up and walked back inside.

Blaine picked up a glass of liquor and handed it to Scarlet. “This fruit wine isn’t bad. It’s sweet but not cloying. Give it a taste.

Scarlet replied, “Thanks, but I’m good.”

Instead of putting the liquor away, Blaine began staring directly at her. “Do you only drink whatever your husband gives you?

Scarlet began feeling uncomfortable under his gaze, but she didn’t know exactly why. She quietly stepped aside. “I have to go to work tomorrow.”

“It’s just some fruit wine. It won’t do a thing,” he said, pushing the glass toward her stubbornly. In a joking tone, he said, Do you think I drugged it? Don’t worry. Your husband’s right there. I wouldn’t dare.”

His words made Scarlet extremely uncomfortable. Blaine made it sound like the only reason he didn’t drug her was that he was afraid of William, not because it was illegal and shouldn’t be done.

Scarlet frowned. The fine hair on her arms was standing up.

At that very moment, William pushed open the glass door and walked in.

His steady stride added to his strong presence, making it hard to ignore him. The chilling air around him practically brought the temperature down as he stalked toward Scarlet. He placed a warm, firm hand on her waist and gently pulled her toward him.
