Ruth stammered, unsure of what to say. With all the rumors flying around, how was she supposed to know who started it?
William didn’t even care about her response. “If you live in this house, then you’d better understand who’s in charge here. Don’t waste your energy worrying about what people outside say.”
Ruth hurriedly said, “Of course, Mr. Cooper! That’s obviously you!”
He gave a faint, unreadable smile. “If my employees were as slow as you, they wouldn’t last a day.”
Ruth had no idea what she’d done wrong. She nervously wrung her hands together, panicking. “Aren’t you the person in charge here?”
William turned off the water, picked up his cup, and shot her a cold, casual glance. “You’re here to take care of Scarlet. After three whole years, do you still not know who your boss is?”
Ruth froze, stunned into silence.
William didn’t press further, simply walking away.
After that little push, something finally clicked in Ruth’s mind. The next morning, her attitude toward Scarlet changed entirely.
Scarlet was heading downstairs to feed the cat when Ruth practically jumped in front of her. “Oh, I got this! Don’t even bother. If you get cat hair on you, Mr. Cooper won’t even want to come near you.”

As soon as Scarlet got seated, Ruth said, “I made scrambled eggs with bacon and some blueberry pancakes-sweet or savory first?”
“Scrambled eggs with bacon.”
Just as Scarlet was about to take her first bite, Ruth gasped. “Careful-it’s hot! Do you want me to blow on it for you?”
Scarlet flatly said, “Or you can just eat it yourself.”
Ruth stepped back, looking a little hurt. “I’m just worried you’ll burn yourself.”
Scarlet couldn’t help feeling a little bemused. She didn’t understand the sudden shift in Ruth, but didn’t dwell on it.
She’d grown up starved for love, always giving her heart freely to others. But once someone betrayed her, the door slammed shut for good. One mistake, and they were gone for life.
It was Sunday, a rare day off. She could sit down and eat breakfast without rushing.
After a while, William came downstairs and took a seat across from her. Ruth served him scrambled eggs with bacon.
As they ate, William’s gaze flicked toward Scarlet several times, but she ignored him, eating slowly.
After finishing just half a plate, he straightened his tie and put his coat back on.
Scarlet didn’t even glance up, clearly uninterested in what he was doing. Even as he buttoned his coat and put on his watch, her attention stayed on the food, savoring each bite.
“I’m heading out,” he said.
Scarlet looked up briefly, puzzled. What was the point of telling her? He’d gone to Amriva without a word, and now, he was
