Chapter 1583
“I understand, Grandma May.”
Duncan was feeling downcast.
However, his frustration lasted only two minutes before he regained his fighting spirit. Since he hadn’t yet started the pursuit, it would be pointless to lose motivation now; he might as well move on.
“It’s getting late. You should head home.”
Grandma May gestured toward the door.
Duncan replied with a smirk, “Are you kicking me out, Grandma May? I was planning to have a drink or two with Zachary.”
“I’m not drinking tonight,”
Zachary quickly interjected.
Duncan chuckled. “I heard you don’t drink at business parties anymore. Apparently, you quit alcohol because your wife doesn’t approve. You don’t smoke, drink, gamble, or solicit. Mr. York has become a model husband.”
The grandmother and grandson chimed in unison, “Watch and learn.”
Duncan was left speechless.
Eventually, Duncan left Wildridge Manor.
Once he was gone, Zachary lingered to chat with his nana for a while. Because they were close, they had plenty to discuss. It took several yawns from Grandma May before Zachary finally said, “You’re tired. It’s time for you to get some rest.”
Grandma May yawned again. “I’m getting old. I can barely keep my eyes open as bedtime approaches. Still, I’ll go to sleep and wake up before dawn.”
She rose to her feet and retreated to her bedroom.
Zachary waited until his nana was settled in bed before heading upstairs.
Thinking his wife was waiting for him, Zachary opened the bedroom door to a dark room.
He turned on the light and scanned the room, but the slender figure he expected was nowhere to be found.
Assuming Serenity was in her sister’s room, Zachary took his time before moving on.
Zachary set out to find his wife. After taking a shower, he sat on the bed with a magazine, but by eleven o’clock, his partner had still not returned. Disliking and unaccustomed to sleeping alone, Zachary decided to search for Serenity.
He reached his sister-in-law’s bedroom and assumed Serenity was inside. Listening closely for any sounds, he found the room silent. Eventually, he knocked on the door.
Liberty was already asleep, but she stirred at the sound of the knock. Sitting up, she asked, “Who is it?”
“It’s me, Liberty. Is Seren in your room?”
“Seren is in the study,” she replied.
Zachary said, “Oh. Sorry to bother you, Liberty.” He hadn’t considered that Serenity might be studying the ledgers.
Soon, he arrived at the study and raised his arm to knock on the door.
“Seren.”
His voice distracted Serenity from her books, and she was surprised to see it was already midnight. Closing the book she was holding, she returned it to its place, got up, walked around the desk, and opened the door.
“What time is it? Why aren’t you in bed yet? You left your husband all alone,” Zachary complained.
Serenity smiled and replied, “I didn’t realize the time. I didn’t expect to be away for so long.”
She turned off the study light, closed the door, and locked it.
Then, she lovingly held Zachary’s arm. “Don’t be mad, babe.”
Zachary scoffed playfully, “Well, it’s up to you how you want to handle it.”
Serenity giggled.
Back in the bedroom, she playfully pinned him against the door and teased, “I’ll show you what I want to do about it.” She wrapped her arms around him.
Zachary bent down to her eye level, allowing her to seal his lips with a kiss. However, a certain someone was not entirely satisfied with just a kiss.
