Chapter 1569
Serenity focused on her primary task: determining the family properties of her in-laws. This was essential preparation for her future role as the head missus. By concentrating on this, she could momentarily set aside her thoughts about whether she was pregnant.
Zachary wrapped his arms around her again and whispered sweet nothings in her ear. Serenity immediately blushed and playfully pinched his thigh.
Zachary responded with a laugh, exclaiming, “Honey, are you trying to kill your husband?”
“Come on, I barely touched you. You screamed like a little girl!” Serenity teased.
Zachary burst into laughter.
Meanwhile, at the Stones’ home, Mrs. Stone was being assisted into the house by the housekeeper and an unfamiliar man.
As Elisa was about to leave, she noticed this scene and quickly set her bag down on the sofa, rushing over in concern. “Mom, what happened to you?” she asked anxiously, recalling that her mother had mentioned going out for a walk to get some fresh air.
Mrs. Stone was helped to the sofa, where she explained, “I accidentally fell and sprained my foot. Fortunately, Mr. Reading found me and brought me back.”
Elisa knelt in front of her mother and noticed that her clothes were dirty, confirming that she had indeed fallen. Looking at her mother’s foot, she saw it was slightly red and swollen, indicating a sprain.
Elisa immediately asked the housekeeper to fetch some ointment.
She then stood up and expressed her gratitude to the unfamiliar man, saying, “Thank you, Mr. Reading.”
Mr. Reading, who appeared to be in his early thirties and quite handsome, struck Elisa as somewhat familiar, although she didn’t know him personally. Since he had witnessed her mother’s fall nearby, he must live in the area.
Elisa had never met Mr. Reading but felt that he looked recognizable.
Mr.
Reading replied, “You’re welcome. Anyone who saw your mom would have sent her home.”
“Elisa, Mr. Reading is Zachary’s cousin. They’re the same age,” Mrs. Stone explained.
Mr. Reading was Tania’s nephew on her father’s side.
The Readings were a wealthy family but kept a low profile. Aside from Tania marrying into the Yorks and becoming the matriarch, few people paid attention to the Readings. They rarely attended high-society parties in Wiltspoon, so only a handful of people knew them.
Elisa was quite surprised.
She had liked Zachary for many years and had openly confessed her feelings, but she had never met his cousin.
No wonder Mr. Reading seemed familiar to her; it wasn’t that she had seen him before, but rather that he resembled Tania. After all, they were aunt and nephew.
Since Elisa had seen Tania before, she found Mr. Reading familiar upon first meeting him.
“Mr. Reading, thank you so much. Please have a seat.”
Now that Elisa knew Mr. Reading was Zachary’s cousin, she considered him a close relative. Plus, he had been kind enough to take her mother home when she sprained her foot, so Elisa felt grateful and was friendly toward him.
Mr. Reading said, “Ms. Stone, I have something to attend to, so I won’t be staying. I’ll visit again another day when I have time.”
“Mr. Reading, you should sit and enjoy a cup of tea.”
Mr. Reading politely declined the hospitality of the mother and daughter.
Mrs. Stone instructed her daughter, “Elisa, see Mr. Reading off.”
Elisa nodded.
She escorted Mr. Reading outside.
