“He’ll eventually give up if he realizes he’s getting nowhere,” she said, dismissing the idea of him pursuing her. Duncan was a prominent CEO, and rejection would likely deter him.
“Liberty, he and Zachary are close friends, meeting frequently. Plus, Zachary is your brother-in-law, which makes it nearly impossible for you two not to cross paths,” her friend pointed out.
Liberty paused, then replied, “You’re right; I’ll just reject him outright. If he comes to my store for breakfast in the future, I’ll have my staff attend to him. I won’t speak to him myself.”
With no way to escape the situation, she decided to confront it head-on. Liberty believed that if she maintained a cold demeanor and ignored Duncan, he would find it unbearable and eventually give up on her. She felt confident that Duncan would soon realize that Lily was a better match for him.
“Seren, why didn’t you tell me about Mr. Lewis’s feelings sooner?” Liberty complained about her sister keeping the truth from her.
Serenity responded apologetically, “You were still recovering, and Zachary asked Mr. Lewis not to confess to you yet to avoid frightening you, so I kept it from you.”
Had it not been for Serenity feeling wronged on Liberty’s behalf due to Mrs. Lewis’s insinuations, she would have waited until her sister was discharged from the hospital to discuss it.
However, it was a conversation they needed to have, and addressing it now seemed preferable.
“Don’t keep anything from me in the future. We’re sisters who have supported each other for years. What could possibly be too difficult to share? No matter what it is, I can handle it,” Liberty insisted.
She was shocked to learn that Duncan had feelings for her and felt hurt that her sister had kept her in the dark. In this world, they were each other’s closest confidants, and there should be nothing they couldn’t discuss.
Liberty recalled Grandma May’s promise that she could introduce her to a better man, one who could help her create a happier and more fulfilling life than she had with Hank. That, she believed, would be the ultimate revenge against him. She contemplated, “If Mr. Lewis doesn’t back down, I will reach out to Grandma May for assistance.”
