makeup, and I’m nearing forty. I don’t deserve her.”
Mrs. Lewis reached out to pinch his face. “Your face is fierce? Which part is fierce? Even with scars, you’re still handsome! Do you think I’ll give you both my blessings if you keep putting yourself down? Not a chance!”
“Why would I need your approval for my choices? If you accept Liberty and like her, we’ll bring Sonny home often to visit you and keep you company after we marry. If you don’t like her, the three of us can live happily in one of my many houses without bothering you.”
Mrs. Lewis was left speechless.
Duncan was accustomed to being independent.
He believed that his feelings for Liberty were his own concern. Whether or not he could marry her in the future was also his decision, and he felt his parents should not interfere.
If his parents accepted her, he would bring Liberty home frequently to spend time with them.
If they did not accept her, he would go back on his own. He would not subject his wife and child to his parents’ disdain.
In short, his marriage was his choice!
“Besides, Liberty doesn’t even like me. Just look at your son, Mom. Even she doesn’t care for me. How can you look down on her? If there’s anyone deserving of disdain, it’s me. If Liberty is willing to accept me, marry me, and end my bachelor life, you should be thankful to her instead.
“Your least desirable youngest son is finally being ‘sold off,’ so you should shower Liberty with money as a token to prevent her from returning the merchandise.”
Mrs. Lewis was at a loss for words.
She glared at her son, opening her mouth multiple times to respond, but no words came out.
She was furious.
This son could truly infuriate her to the point of feeling ill.
“Mom, I just don’t feel a connection with Lily. You can’t force
Emotions. “I don’t love Lily, so I won’t force myself to be with her. You should talk to her and stop wasting her time.” Mrs. Lewis stared at him for a long moment before responding, “Unless hell freezes over and pigs start to fly, I will never agree to you and Liberty being together!”
