End of the Contract,Start of His Obsession Chapter 77

The next day at work, a nurse informed Scarlet that Xyla’s eyes were hurting again.

Scarlet was performing an eye check for a patient. She said without looking up, “Her eyes have been fine for days. Just ignore

her.”

“She insists something’s wrong and that she’s going blind. She wants you to check on her.” The nurse was clearly exhausted by Xyla’s antics, so she pleaded, “Dr. Benson, why don’t you just head over and take a look?”

Scarlet replied, “I’ll head over as soon as I’m done.” The nurse thanked her before leaving.

Once Scarlet finished her examination, she made her way to Xyla’s room. She pushed the door open, only to find Xyla happily snacking on a platter of freshly sliced fruit.

“You’re finally here!” Xyla said cheerfully upon seeing Scarlet. She didn’t look the least bit sick.

“Must you cause a scene every single day?” Scarlet asked.

Xyla didn’t respond. Instead, she shot a pointed look toward the sofa.

Scarlet turned and realized a man was sitting there. He rose to his feet, radiating an air of refined elegance and warmth. He wore a brown overcoat over a cream turtleneck

The man nodded politely and said, “Hello, Dr. Benson, I’m Xyla’s brother, Ryan Turner.”

Scarlet was momentarily taken aback. “Hello.”

Ryan approached Scarlet and extended his hand. “Xyla has a terrible temper. She must have given you a hard time lately.”

Scarlet briefly shook his hand before letting go. “She’s really a troublemaker.”

Ryan smiled. “I was away on a business trip recently, but she kept talking about you. She really likes you.”

Scarlet studied him for a moment before asking, “You look a little familiar. Have we met before?”

“I went to school with William,” Ryan replied

“Oh.” He had probably been to the Cooper residence or attended their wedding

Scarlet was socially awkward. Three sentences with a stranger was usually her limit before the conversation died out. She didn’t know what else to say. For some reason, the mood suddenly felt like a blind date.

From the bed, Xyla’s eyes darted between them before she let out a dramatic yell, “Gosh!”

Then, she continued, “Ryan, didn’t you bring a gift for Scarlet?”

Ryan lightly tapped Xyla on the back of her head, then picked up a paper bag from the sofa and handed it to Scarlet.

Scarlet waved her hand and said, “Hospital policy strictly forbids us from accepting gifts.”

“It’s just a cup, nothing extravagant.” Ryan opened the box to show her the gift. “I passed through Tinkle Alley on my business trip, and since Xyla was clamoring for a gift, I picked up a few things.”

It was indeed just a ceramic cup, featuring a beautiful ice–crackle glaze. Scarlet was rather fond of the cup.

Sensing her hesitation, Ryan added, “Just think of it as a gift from Xyla.”

“Just take it! If you don’t accept this, my mom will show up tomorrow trying to hand you a Hermes bag”

Scarlet took the cup and said, “I’ll accept this, then. Thank you. It’s beautiful.”

The ophthalmology department became more peaceful after Xyla was finally discharged.
