End of the Contract,Start of His Obsession Chapter 63

That evening, Scarlet made dinner. Having learned from her last failed attempt, she was far less frantic this time, and the final result turned out presentable.

Once everything was ready, she sat at the dining table and checked the time. It had been an hour and a half since that phone call. William should have been back by now.

When the moment finally came, she was far calmer than she had expected. What she had once clung to, she could now let go of. What had once felt impossible to part with no longer mattered.

It had been a painful, excruciating process. Yet without it, Scarlet might never have been able to move on from William so easily.

She had loved him, and she had hated him too. However, at the very end, she could finally let go in peace.

This marriage had taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way. She had strayed down a detour and lost herself briefly, but in the end, found the path she was meant to take.

Scarlet sat in the dining room, waiting for William to come home. Yet as the sky slowly darkened, there was no sound of a car pulling up outside..

The crystal chandelier above the table cast its light over the spread of dishes, now gone cold.

She waited for nearly three hours, but he never came. William had been a jerk, yes, but he wasn’t the type to break his word. She didn’t know what had happened. She tried calling him several times, but no one answered.

On her last attempt, just as it was about to go to voicemail, someone picked up.

“Are you on your way back?” Scarlet asked.

“Hello? Scarlet?” Nicole’s voice came through instead.

Scarlet’s words died in her throat. So that was it.

No wonder he hadn’t come home.

She hadn’t expected this, especially not today, when they’d agreed to meet and discuss the divorce. It was something important, and yet he just brushed it off like it didn’t matter. He didn’t even bother to inform her.

Perhaps she had already been disappointed enough. At that moment, she felt neither surprise nor resentment.

“Where’s William?” Scarlet asked.

“Something came up on my end at the last minute. He can’t leave right now,” Nicole replied. “Are you waiting for him at home? You might have to wait a little longer.”

“Okay, I understand.”

After she hung up, Scarlet looked at the table of food that had already gone cold. Suddenly, everything became clear.

She had always thought that, in the end, the two of them would sit down face–to–face. Just as they had begun, their ending should have had the same dignity and formality.

Only then did it sink in. The time was up, and this was how it had to end. They had already agreed on the divorce, and there were no assets to divide. If that was the case, perhaps there was no real need to sit down and say anything to each other after all.

She had packed her luggage that afternoon. Scarlet called a cab, and the driver helped load her suitcase into the trunk.

She got in, and the engine started.

Chapter 63

In the rearview mirror, everything slowly receded.

Their marital home at No. 9 Wolke Bay.

The three years she had spent there.

And a love that had a beginning, but never reached its end.

In the emergency department, Nicole had a phone in hand, just about to delete the call history. She caught movement at the door out of the corner of her eye and immediately stopped.

“The brain CT scan results are back. There’s nothing wrong,” William said as he walked in with the report. “But your knee needs rest. Take it easy for a while.”

Nicole handed him the phone, her face calm and innocent. “Howard brought it over earlier. Scarlet called you several times and sounded anxious, so I picked up and let her know.”

William took the phone and glanced through the call log. Scarlet had called him several times.

Nicole’s right leg lay straight on the bed. A jagged wound ran across her knee, held together by three stitches.

She suddenly sucked in a breath, her face draining of color. “William, it hurts a bit…”

He already had the phone to his ear, redialing. He seemed distracted and did not appear to hear her.

Scarlet did not answer. William tried again and received the same result.

Nicole pressed her lips together. “If you’re in a hurry, you should go. I’ll be fine here.”

She played the martyr card, but she didn’t expect him to pick up his coat and leave.

“I’ve already taken care of the medical bill. Mrs. Jameson is on her way and should be here soon. I’ll leave Howard with you- just ask him if you need anything.”

Howard Brooks, dressed in a black suit, stood nearby, looking tense.

She forced a weak smile. “Howard, I’m starting to get a little scared of him.”
