After Bova Capital returned from Wellton Street, not only did they not suffer the adjustment period that financial experts had predicted, but they started doing exceedingly well.
First, they announced that they had acquired Joneson Securities from Heritage Bank. Then, they rapidly and loudly acquired
some large IPO projects.
They were moving so ferociously that the other companies in the industry were feeling quite a lot of pressure.
Headlines like “Bova Capital has broken into the local market” and “William Cooper makes yet another legendary move” covered the financial news pages for days.
The more projects William acquired, the busier he got. He poured all of his energy into his work and spent days living in his apartment near the company.
He was busy enough with Bova Capital. He didn’t have enough hours in a day to finish what he needed to, and he had even taken over a troublesome acquisition that had originally been under Cooper Group.
William had been much too haughty back then. Even if Arthur wanted to ask him for help, he needed to keep asking him over and over again.
For some reason, over the past few days, William had suddenly become extremely helpful, helping Arthur out repeatedly. In. fact, he seemed one step away from taking over the role of president himself.
He had even rushed to help Silas out when one of his tech companies went public at the Hawkinson Stock Exchange.
Chris thought he was either trying to shorten his lifespan by working his butt off or had gone entirely crazy.
The day they returned from Hawkinson, Lebavia was already covered in snow. That winter seemed colder than usual. Snow had started falling much sooner than it had in the previous years.
When they came out of the airport, they saw that Lester was parked on the side of the street. As Chris put their bags into the trunk, he realized that William hadn’t gotten into the car yet.
William looked up at the snowflakes floating amidst the cold air. As if he’d suddenly remembered something, he asked, “Has she picked out a house yet?”
Chris contacted Scarlet every now and then. She was busy, so she would only reply when she was free. “Mrs. Cooper said she no longer wanted any real estate. She decided she wanted money instead.”
William frowned. “She was adamant about wanting a house. Why did she change her mind all of a sudden?”
How was Chris supposed to know? He thought it was good enough if she replied once a day. She definitely didn’t have the time to tell Chris why.
“I’ve withdrawn the corresponding amount of money to the market price of the mansion in Wolke Bay. Should I transfer it to her now?”
William took a box of cigars out of his pocket and wanted to light one up, but he realized that it was empty.
He tossed the empty box into a nearby trash can and reached a hand out to Chris. “I need a smoke.”
Hearing that, Chris hesitated.
Coldly, William said, “Do I pay you that much for you to refuse giving me a single cigarette?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
Chris hurriedly gave William one of his own cigarettes, but William frowned. “Stop smoking such cheap cigarettes. They’re not good for you.”

That was why Chris had hesitated–he knew William would call Gold Stem Cigarettes cheap.
William had been smoking at a ridiculous pace lately. It might have been because he hadn’t been resting well, so he needed a smoke to wake himself up. In just two weeks, he had finished the supply that Chris had prepared. It was supposed to last him
three months.
“Mr. Cooper, smoking itself isn’t good for you.”
Chris wanted to tell William to stop smoking so much, but before he could continue, William glanced at him. “Being sarcastic, are we? Stop picking up bad habits from Scarlet.”
Chris felt incredibly wronged. He had no idea which of William’s sentences were traps. “I don’t spend enough time with Mrs. Cooper to learn any habits from her.”
William opened the door and got into the car while scoffing coldly. “I bet you want to, right?”
Chris fell silent.
Bova Capital was finally done with some major projects and wanted to take a break, but William seemed unhappy at the sight of gaps in their schedule. He planned to look for other projects to work on.
All his staff members started complaining to Chris. “Mr. Hemworth, please talk to Mr. Cooper. He may be invincible, but we’re not!”
So, Chris walked into William’s office with the whole company’s hope on his shoulders.
Once William was done signing his papers, Chris finally spoke. “Mr. Cooper, we’re finally done with all our recent projects. Don’t you want to take a break? You haven’t been home in two weeks, after all.”
William looked up at him. “Why should I go home?”
