Had everything William said been a lie? Had he lied just to spend more alone time with Scarlet?
She wasn’t the only one who had fallen during their days in the northern suburbs. He had wanted to stay in that moment, too, right? Even if it was just for a moment.
Her questions made her heart clench, as if it were being held by an invisible hand. Her remaining rationality forced her to stop chasing after him.
The taillights from the Bentley disappeared in the dark cloak of the night sky. A cold breeze blew past her face. Scarlet’s tears finally fell from her eyes.
Why did he have to tell her? What good did it do to tell her that now? She would only pity herself more.
Everything William had ever done to show he loved her slashed across her chest like knives. She couldn’t move or get rid of them. Even the slightest movement would cut deep into her flesh.
She’d rather have been lied to for the rest of her life and never known that once upon a time, William had done so much just to spend more time with her.
Ruth heard the sound of the engine and the sound of their conversation, but no one had entered the house. She opened the door, confused, and saw Scarlet standing silently amidst the cold night with tears running down her face.
“What’s wrong? Why are you standing alone in the cold? What if you get a fever again?” Ruth fussed over Scarlet. “Where’s Mr. Cooper? Didn’t he come back with you?”
Scarlet remained silent and walked back to her room on the second floor, holding the wooden handrail for support.
She didn’t have the energy to shower. She didn’t even take off her clothes, which she had worn for the whole day. She wrapped herself tightly in her blanket and fell asleep in a daze.
When she woke up the next morning, her eyes were swollen.
She placed cold spoons on them to reduce the swelling, but the effect was barely noticeable.
When she went out to go to work, Ruth was sweeping the front yard. She mumbled to herself, “Which hooligan left all these cigar butts outside our gate?”
That afternoon, Chris sent an e–mail to Scarlet.
William owned plenty of real estate. Apart from those in Lebavia, he had quite a few houses in foreign cities as well, including Nevaia. The e–mail contained pages full of real estate listings.
