Chapter 1378
Zachary was convinced that Serenity would accompany him home as long as he could enter without disturbing the Soxes during their rest. With this thought in mind, he took action. Unbeknownst to him, the Soxes’ hounds were watching him from a nearby corner.
As Zachary climbed the gate, preparing to jump down, he turned around and saw two wolfhounds staring intently at him. He nearly lost his composure. He was aware that the neighboring houses had dogs, which had been barking as he drove past to reach the Soxes’ residence. However, he was completely unaware that the Soxes also owned dogs.
When he arrived at the Soxes’ property, the neighboring dogs ceased barking, and the Soxes’ dogs remained silent as well. It never crossed his mind that these hounds were not the barking type. There’s a saying about dogs being all bark and no bite, but if the situation were reversed…
These dogs would have torn him apart had he jumped without looking.
Woof! Woof—
Seeing that Zachary had no intention of jumping, the hounds began to growl at him. At that moment, he noticed a light illuminating the Soxes’ property. Quickly, he jumped down on the other side of the gate and returned to his car after landing. Leaning against his car, he pretended that nothing had happened and attempted to pull out a cigarette to smoke, only to find that he couldn’t locate his cigarette pack.
He rarely smoked these days since Serenity disliked the smell of tobacco, and he hadn’t brought any cigarettes with him.
“Who is it, Whiskey?” Mrs. Sox’s voice echoed.
She stepped out of the house and turned on the yard lights. As the dogs barked toward the gate, she descended the steps for a closer look. Zachary approached the gate to the yard and said, “Mrs. Sox, it’s
“Me, Zachary.”
Mrs. Sox noticed him.
“Oh, Zachary. It’s late. What brings you here?”
“I’m here to take Seren home, Mrs. Sox.”
Mrs. Sox stepped closer but did not open the gate for Zachary. “Seren said she had a headache and went to bed early. I don’t think we should wake her. Why don’t you come back in the morning?”
Zachary asked, concerned, “What caused Seren’s headache?”
“She mentioned she drank too much at the party and didn’t rest well today.”
Zachary felt guilty about that. She hadn’t been able to catch up on sleep because of him, which was likely why her head hurt.
“Mrs. Sox, I see there’s a light on the third floor. Is Seren awake?”
Mrs. Sox turned and looked up at the third floor. “No, that’s just Jasmine’s nightlight. It’s a faint glow.”
“Oh,” Zachary replied.
He wanted to take Serenity home, but Mrs. Sox insisted Serenity had gone to bed early. She didn’t want to disturb her. Now that he knew Serenity had a headache, Zachary agreed that waking her was not a good idea.
“I’ll come by in the morning to take Seren home, Mrs. Sox.”
Mrs. Sox said, “You might want to come early. Jasmine mentioned taking Serenity to check on their investment project first thing in the morning.”
“Okay, I’ll be here by dawn. Thank you, Mrs. Sox.”
“You’re welcome. Now, head home.”
Mrs. Sox patted the hounds, saying, “He’s not a stranger, so stop barking. Go lie down.”
The hounds obediently turned around and settled in their corner while still keeping an eye on the house.
Mrs. Sox then turned on her heel and walked back into the house.
