Chapter 1330
The same individual also looked down on Serenity’s background.
A country girl climbed the social ladder merely because she saved Old Mrs. York.
With so many elders in the York family, it was surprising that no one objected to allowing a country girl to become the eldest missus of the family. She would eventually assume the role of the lady of the house. Was the York family not concerned that Serenity’s lack of competence might bring shame upon them
and make them the object of ridicule?
If Serenity had married another son of the York family, perhaps she would not have attracted as much jealousy.
“You’re right. I also believe that Serenity lacks insight. She doesn’t think things through and is overly impulsive. She relies on her husband’s status and shows little respect to many, often meddling in others’ affairs and creating enemies for Mr. York.”
This time it was Mrs. Newman who spoke up.
“Exactly. Serenity is quite intrusive. You’re Mrs. Newman, right? I recall Serenity interfering in your daughters’ matters during the Dowlings’ party. I called Tania out of goodwill to advise her to keep an eye on her daughter-in-law, but she scolded me and blocked my number.”
It was Mrs. Walker, who harbored hostility and disdain for Serenity after Tania’s rebuke and subsequent blocking.
Mrs. Walker had been furious; she had intended to help, but Tania had dismissed her.
If Serenity had been her daughter-in-law and dared to meddle in others’ affairs and cause trouble for her son, she would have urged him to divorce her immediately and find a more agreeable wife.
Even if Tania wished to support her daughter-in-law, she should have considered the broader implications. Protecting Serenity in such a manner would only lead to more trouble for her in the
future.
The York family would inevitably face ruin at Serenity’s hands, sooner or later.
Her actions would tarnish their reputation.
“Tania has arrived, accompanied by her son and daughter-in-law.”
While Mrs. Newman and Mrs. Walker were gossiping about Serenity, someone suddenly raised their voice.
With the exception of Old Mr. Marshall, everyone else in the Marshall family stood to greet them.
The other ladies exchanged knowing glances.
Mrs. Walker nudged Mrs. Newman and whispered, “Tania hasn’t attended a banquet in ages. You’re fortunate to see her tonight.”
Mrs. Newman responded softly, “She’s here out of respect for Old Mr. Marshall.”
“That’s true. Everyone here holds Old Mr. Marshall in high regard. He generously hosts such a grand business reception once or twice a year, allowing people to connect and discuss their daily lives. The men can even pursue business negotiations.”
The annual Marshalls’ banquet is a highlight for Wiltspoonians, where company leaders can network with individuals they wouldn’t typically meet and engage in business discussions.
This highlights Old Mr. Marshall’s exceptional status in the business community.
After all, even the York family holds him in esteem.
Old Mrs. York affectionately addresses Old Mr. Marshall by name whenever she sees him.
Outside the hotel, Serenity was helped out of the car by her partner, who displayed great gentlemanly care.
He was concerned she might struggle in her stilettos.
With a soft smile, Serenity reassured him, “If I had to wear heels this high in the past, I wouldn’t have been able to walk, but I’m accustomed to it now. Don’t worry; I promise I won’t embarrass you tonight.”
“I’m not worried about being embarrassed. What’s
“What matters most is that you’re happy and not feeling wronged,” she said. Serenity playfully tickled the palm of his hand, laughing as she did so. “I’m your wife. Who would dare to cross me?” Her playful gesture made Zachary long to wrap her in his arms and kiss her passionately a million times. She was such a little minx, always teasing him in public, leaving him unable to punish her.
