Chapter 1255
Liberty was indifferent to Jessica, who, having found no useful information, begrudgingly returned to Hank’s side.
As she did, she took in her surroundings.
Although the space was small, Liberty had organized and decorated it in a cozy way.
Jessica had to admit that Liberty was far superior to her in terms of housekeeping.
Meanwhile, Hank was showing Sonny how to assemble building blocks, as he rarely spent time with his son. Staring at the chaotic pile of blocks and the assembly instructions, he realized how challenging it was to construct the project.
He knew he would never have the patience for such a task.
“Do you actually know how to build that?” Jessica inquired.
“Why don’t you give it a shot?”
Hank, feeling overwhelmed, snapped at his wife in response.
Sonny looked between Jessica and his father, then innocently asked, “Dad, why is she always following you?”
Hank was left speechless.
Before he could respond, Jessica sweetly interjected, “Sonny, I’m your dad’s wife. You can call me Mom too.”
“I have a mom. You’re not my mom!”
Sonny quickly retorted, his annoyance evident. Hearing this, Liberty emerged from the kitchen.
“Mom!”
Sonny jumped up and ran to Liberty, hugging her legs. He looked up, worried, and said, “Mom, you’re my mommy. She’s not my mom!”
Liberty picked up her son and coldly addressed Jessica, “Ms. Yates, Sonny only needs me as his mother. He doesn’t require you as his stepmother. Mr. Brown, please take your wife and leave.”
Hank felt embarrassed as he glanced at his ex-wife and son.
Jessica replied, “Liberty, I am Sonny’s stepmom. A stepmother is still a mother. Did I say anything wrong?”
“Sonny is Hank’s son, and I’m Hank’s wife. It’s perfectly normal for me to say that we’re a family,” she stated.
“Jessica!” Hank called out in a low voice, pulling his wife’s hand. He turned to Liberty and said, “We need to leave now.” With that, he hurriedly dragged Liberty out, anxious that Jessica and Liberty might start an argument. He slammed the door behind them.
Once the obnoxious couple was gone, Liberty carried her son to the sofa and explained, “Sonny, Mom and Dad have divorced, and your dad has remarried. That Yates woman is indeed your dad’s wife… She’s your stepmother. However, you don’t need to call her mom. I’m your only mother.”
Sonny, not knowing what divorce meant, didn’t fully grasp what his mother was saying. However, one thing was clear to him: he had only one mother. He understood that because of the divorce, they could no longer live with his dad. Sonny seemed to catch bits and pieces of the situation.
“Mom, why did you divorce Dad?” he asked.
Liberty gently stroked her son’s head and replied, “It’s an adult thing. You’re still young, so you won’t understand. There’s no need to ask. Just know that Mom and Dad will always be your parents. Nothing can change that.”
Sonny appeared to understand.
“Go play by yourself for a while, Sonny. Mom needs to work, okay?”
Sonny nodded. “Okay.”
Noticing the building blocks scattered around, Liberty helped her son clean up. “If you can’t put these blocks together, just put them away for now. You can try again when you’re older.”
“Dunc is coming tomorrow. I’ll ask him to teach me,” Sonny replied eagerly.
