Liberty. Lily had assumed Duncan would be too blind to fall for a chubby divorcee like Liberty, who came with so much extra baggage. However, she was now starting to think Mrs. Lewis had a valid point.
Duncan enjoyed having breakfast at Liberty’s diner, and over time, something might develop between them.
“I don’t know this woman; I’ve never seen her before. I’ll look her up to find out who she is and how she knows Duncan. She seemed to be leaving in a hurry. Duncan must have confronted her about something. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about her,” Mrs. Lewis remarked.
Mrs. Lewis, being older and a mother figure to Duncan, was a better judge of character than Lily. It didn’t take long for her to recognize Jessica in the photo before dismissing her.
“Is this the street Duncan drives by on his way to the office? If I’m correct, Duncan owns half of that street. He purchased the commercial properties there and left the management to his butler, who collects the rent.”
“Liberty once worked at Duncan’s company. She quit after her divorce, and I didn’t keep track of what she did afterward. I can’t believe she rented a space from Duncan to open a diner.”
Mrs. Lewis frowned and added, “I wonder if Duncan collects rent from her. I should ask him.”
“I told you to keep an eye on Liberty. She is the one you should consider a rival. Out of all the places she could have chosen to start her business, Liberty decided to set up on that street—right on Duncan’s route to work.
“It’s obvious what her intentions are. I bet she wants to marry into a wealthy family, especially since her sister managed to do so. But she should take a good look in the mirror. She’s overweight, divorced, and has a son from her previous marriage. She should count herself lucky if she finds another man. How dare she set her sights on my son?”
Mrs. Lewis directed all her blame toward Liberty. “Mrs. Lewis, I believe Liberty isn’t currently focused on Duncan. Let’s not hastily categorize her as a gold digger. Didn’t Serenity marry Mr. York without knowing his true identity? She almost had a serious conflict with him when the truth came to light.”
