He truly believed he was treating Liberty well because of Sonny, whom he liked.
“Even if Mr. Lewis has an interest in my sister, I hope he doesn’t genuinely like her. I know Mrs. Lewis has already chosen her future daughter-in-law, and Ms. Harmon is a suitable match for Mr. Lewis in terms of social standing.
“Besides, my sister has no plans to marry again. Even if she does, Mr. Lewis likely wouldn’t be her choice.”
Mrs. Lewis was not as open-minded as Serenity’s mother-in-law.
Tania felt she wasn’t good enough for Zachary, but she respected his decisions and choices. She never bothered Serenity or treated her poorly; instead, she was kind to her daughter-in-law.
Some people were unhappy with Serenity for assisting Camryn during the Dowlings’ banquet. They called Tania in an attempt to create conflict, but Tania rebuked them instead.
Serenity learned about this from Old Mrs. York; otherwise, she wouldn’t have known how protective her mother-in-law was.
Old Mrs. York stated that Serenity was the York family’s matriarch. Regardless of her performance, outsiders had no right to criticize her.
In other words, family could offer criticism, but outsiders were not permitted to speak ill of Serenity.
Serenity appreciated the open-mindedness and protectiveness of the York family’s elders.
“If Duncan realizes he has feelings for Liberty, we can simply observe and do nothing. Duncan is a determined person. Since breaking free from his family’s control and establishing Lewis & Co., he has taken charge of his own life.”
“The elders in the Lewis family won’t be able to control him. If he truly likes Liberty, and as long as she is willing to face the challenges with him, they will be able to be together until the end. No matter how difficult Mrs. Lewis may be, she can’t stop them.”
“You can’t do anything to Duncan.”
“Mrs. Lewis can’t harm Mr. Lewis, but she will go after my sister.”
Serenity sighed. “When my sister was with the Browns, she endured endless criticism from her mother-in-law. If she marries again and faces harsh treatment from another mother-in-law, I’ll really feel for her.”
She wanted her sister to find happiness, but she was also worried about the possibility of her sister encountering another difficult mother-in-law.
