Chapter 1131
Serenity woke up feeling hungry.
As she regained her senses, she instinctively reached for her side but found it empty—there was no wolf beside her.
Tilting her head, she noticed that the pillow next to hers was vacant.
Even under the blanket, there was no warmth; that wolf had risen long ago.
Serenity initially thought the sky was just brightening, but when she checked the time on her phone, she froze and then sat up abruptly.
It was almost noon!
No wonder she felt so hungry.
After sleeping for so long, it would have been odd if she weren’t hungry.
Zachary hadn’t woken her up.
Quickly, Serenity grabbed a change of clothes and headed to the bathroom. After getting ready, she washed up and rushed downstairs without applying any makeup.
While she was still on the stairs, her phone rang.
It was the wolf calling.
“Zachary.”
Serenity paused to answer the call. As soon as she did, she complained softly, “You didn’t wake me when you got up. I just woke up, and it’s already noon!”
Zachary chuckled on the other end. “I saw you sleeping soundly, so I let you rest a bit longer. I called Ms. Sox for you and told her you were a little tired today and would only be back at the store in the afternoon.”
Jasmine might jump to conclusions with that explanation, but Serenity and Zachary had been quite free-spirited the night before.
“You’re off work, right?”
“I just wrapped up a meeting and am about to have lunch. You should eat before heading out.”
Zachary reminded Serenity, concerned she might leave without having anything to eat.
“It’s lunchtime, so I’ll definitely eat before going out. You go ahead and have your lunch. I’m going—”
“downstairs.”
“Okay, I love you.”
Serenity smiled. “I’m not very accustomed to hearing such sweet words from you. I love you too.”
Afterward, she kissed the phone, mimicking what she had observed during Jasmine’s call with Josh the last time. She laughed and teased Zachary, “I kissed you. Did you feel it?”
Zachary laughed joyfully and replied, “I felt it.”
After planning a romantic evening for Serenity the night before, she had indeed become much more affectionate toward him.
Zachary resolved to be more romantic in the future so that his wife would always show him passion.
Serenity giggled and ended the call.
As Zachary could no longer hear his wife’s playful laughter, he hesitated to move the phone away from his ear.
He wished he could always stay close to Serenity.
At that moment, Zachary finally understood why his father retired so quickly and showed little interest in anything else after taking over York Corporation. His father spent each day with his mother instead… It was clear that if one could grow old together with a loved one, nothing else in the world would compare.
Unfortunately, unlike his father, Zachary had not married or started a family early. He married at thirty and turned thirty-one this year. His successor was still absent.
He would need to work at York Corporation for at least another twenty to thirty years before he could consider retirement.
Unbeknownst to Serenity, his mind was already contemplating retirement. Once she was downstairs, Mrs. Lane greeted her with a smile, “Missus, you’re up. You must be hungry. Lunch is ready.”
Serenity hummed in response, feeling that Mrs. Lane was looking at her with a knowing expression.
She feigned ignorance and walked into the dining room to eat as if nothing were amiss.
She found it enjoyable to eat alone, so she invited Mrs. Lane to join her. Once Serenity satisfied her hunger, she felt inspired to appreciate the house’s interior. Since Zachary hadn’t asked anyone to clean up, the romantic atmosphere from the previous night remained intact. At that moment, Jim entered.
“Missus,” he said.
