Chapter 1048
Unbeknownst to him, Hank had been enabling his sister for many years.
Mrs. Brown was speechless.
The door swung open.
Hank paused his conversation with his mother, suspecting that Jessica had returned home.
As anticipated, Jessica entered with two servings of fast food.
“Darling, you’re back! You arrived just in time—let’s eat. I got two meals for us.”
Jessica approached, carrying the two meals. She sat down beside Hank, took one meal from the bag, and handed it to him. Next, she placed her portion on the coffee table, opened the fast food container, and began to eat.
Hank glanced at his mother, then back at Jessica, and asked, “Darling, did you only get two meals? What about Mom and Dad?”
Jessica replied between bites, “I didn’t get anything for them. They can cook for themselves. There are two packets of instant noodles at home—enough for each of them. And there are still three eggs, enough for the three of you to have one each.”
When her in-laws cooked, they would prepare very little. Her mother-in-law would serve her father-in-law and Hank large portions, then serve herself a generous helping, but would never offer any to Jessica.
By the time Jessica went to serve herself, there would only be a small amount left in the pot.
Her mother-in-law did this intentionally.
Whenever Jessica ate at home, her mother-in-law would purposely avoid buying groceries, and even when she did, she would select items that Jessica disliked.
Even when a simple plate of plain lettuce and three boiled eggs was prepared, it would be just enough for the three of them, leaving Jessica with nothing as the daughter-in-law.
If it weren’t for Hank still being on her side, sharing half of his food with her, and even his
If Jessica had been given a boiled egg to eat, she would have found it impossible to remain in this house. The more she interacted with Liberty, the more she understood why Liberty had expressed gratitude after her divorce. Since they had initiated the conversation, Jessica decided to reciprocate. That was why she only ordered a meal for Hank when getting takeout; as for her in-laws—nothing at all! Mrs. Brown was so furious that her chest began to ache, and she pointed at someone who was eating heartily while she herself was on the verge of unleashing a torrent of insults.
“Mom, I’ll give you my share. I’ll just have instant noodles—I haven’t had them in a long time and I’m craving some,” Jessica offered.
Hank quickly handed his meal to his mother to prevent another conflict from igniting between her and Jessica. Mrs. Brown’s heart ached for her son as she slammed the meal onto the coffee table. Standing up, she exclaimed angrily, “Do you think I can’t afford a fast food meal? I have a pension too! Son, let’s go. Call your dad; we’re going to a restaurant!”
Jessica turned to look at Hank, who immediately yielded and chose to support his wife. “Mom, you can go with Dad,” he said.
Once again, Mrs. Brown felt her anger rise, but she ultimately stormed out in frustration. The family feud had reached a temporary truce.
