Chapter 1007
After a brief pause, Zachary responded, “Yes, but I trust my own perceptions and feelings more. That’s why I hid my identity to assess your character.”
“Considering your character, you wouldn’t agree to marry me without conducting a background check on me. So, why did you still suspect that I was after your money?”
“I was concerned that the investigation might be inaccurate.”
Serenity was at a loss for words.
“Marriage is a lifelong commitment. Women fear marrying the wrong man, but men share that fear as well. I need to connect with you personally to understand your true nature. A background check only provides a brief summary.”
“Indeed, marriage is a lifelong commitment. It appears we both acted too quickly.”
Serenity sighed but added gratefully, “Fortunately, we fell in love with each other.”
If given the chance to start over, she might choose differently.
“Please continue, Seren. I’m eager to hear the rest of the story.” Zachary was reluctant to discuss the period when their marriage was concealed, as those were the days he had deceived her.
If not for her compassion when he accidentally hurt his stomach from starving himself, their relationship might still be at a standstill.
This is why he hesitated to revisit the topic of his hidden identity and the lies he told her.
He could redirect the conversation away from the past by focusing on Camryn.
“Camryn has a younger sister named Carrie. She’s a few years younger and quite attractive, but her personality is dreadful. She actually spiked a glass of wine and asked Camryn to send a bouquet of flowers, then forced Camryn to drink the drugged wine as payment for the flowers.”
“Elisa and I witnessed the entire ordeal. We’ve never encountered such a dreadful sister before. I felt compelled to intervene, and we ended up making Carrie drink the wine instead. The effects of the drug hit her quickly. Within minutes, Carrie claimed she was feeling hot and attempted to undress.
“Mrs. Newman is as biased as my grandparents. Camryn is also her daughter, and she resembles her mother more than Carrie does. Yet, Mrs. Newman solely blamed Camryn and even tried to slap her, but I pulled her back.
“Carrie is incredibly cruel. She tried to sabotage Camryn’s life. If I hadn’t intervened and let Camryn drink the wine… she would have lost her sense of reason once the drug took effect. It would have been disastrous for her, regardless of who got their hands on her.
“Camryn is the wife Nana chose for Callum, meaning we’ll soon be sisters-in-law. It would be fine if I didn’t know this, but since I do, I have to protect her. How can a member of the York family be bullied by others?
Zachary replied softly, “Camryn Newman was born to Mrs. Newman and her first husband. When he passed away, she remarried, and her current husband is her late husband’s elder brother. In other words, she married her brother-in-law.”
Serenity paused. “Even so, she shouldn’t treat her eldest daughter that way.”
“Nana must have her reasons for choosing Camryn. She likely knows something we’re unaware of. Pairing Camryn with Callum might also be meant to assist her.”
“What does Nana know?” Serenity pondered, her curiosity piqued.
Zachary reflected for a moment before saying, “If I’m correct, the circumstances surrounding Camryn’s father’s death may not be as straightforward as they seem.” Serenity was taken aback.
