Since Jessica was not yet pregnant, Hank feared his relationship with Sonny would grow increasingly distant.
This fear intensified when he observed Liberty and Duncan together. Although he doubted Duncan could genuinely have feelings for Liberty, he still worried that his son might start referring to another man as “father.”
Hank wanted to seize the opportunity to spend time with Sonny and strengthen their father-son bond. He also hoped to facilitate a relationship between Jessica and Sonny. If Jessica remained unable to conceive and Liberty wished to remarry, he would fight for custody of Sonny and bring him back home.
After all, Hank was Sonny’s father, and he could not allow his son to call another man his father.
“They already know we’re divorced—why would they bother me? Even if they do, I’m not worried. Sonny isn’t particularly close to them. Besides, you just married that Yates girl. What will she think if you take Sonny back with you?”
“You’ll eventually have a child with the Yates girl, so I’m uncomfortable with you taking Sonny. Your parents and wife have many conflicts as well. If Sonny goes with you, your parents will likely spoil him and create tension with Jessica. Only Sonny will be at risk.”
“Hank, I hope you can adhere to the terms we agreed upon during the divorce.”
“Don’t lecture me about the divorce terms. You received a substantial amount of money from me.”
Hank reflected on how poorly his job was going. He had lost his bonus and could barely survive on his basic salary. His additional income had also dried up because partners were no longer willing to work with Waltham. Consequently, he had no extra funds.
Fortunately, he had worked hard in the past and saved over a million, so even if he lost his job, it would not affect him significantly.

“Thank you for coming all this way to tell me these things,” she added before carrying her son upstairs.

Hank turned to her and raised his voice, “Aren’t you going to invite me up for coffee?”

“There’s no cup for you,” she replied.

Hank was left speechless. She took his money to rent such a nice place, yet wouldn’t even offer him a cup of coffee. What a heartless woman!

“Mommy, why doesn’t Daddy live with us?” Sonny asked innocently, realizing it was becoming increasingly difficult to see his father. While he adored his mommy and aunt, he still missed his dad at times.

“Daddy’s workplace is too far from our current home, making it inconvenient for him to live with us,” Liberty explained.

Sonny seemed to understand but then asked, “Mommy, why aren’t we living in our old home?”

Liberty was momentarily at a loss for words. The boy had matured a bit since the New Year and was starting to ask questions. After some thought, she responded, “Our old home is under renovation. It will take a long time, so we won’t be moving back for now.”

“A long, long time.”

Sonny hummed and stopped his questioning.

When the mother and son returned home, Serenity had prepared dinner. She was feeling bored and had settled in front of the sofa, doodling on her drawing board to pass the time.

“Aunt Seren!”

As soon as Sonny entered the house, he slipped out of his mother’s arms and called out cheerfully to Serenity.

Serenity set down her brush, smiled, and opened her arms wide. When her nephew ran over, she scooped him up and showered him with kisses, asking with a grin, “Did you miss me, Sonny?”
