Chapter 287
Serenity was about to mention that her sister would never forgive infidelity but decided to hum a response instead.
The couple remained silent during the journey. Zachary struggled with small talk while Serenity was too preoccupied with her sister’s marriage to engage in conversation. The car was filled with an uncomfortable silence; even the music was off.
Tilting her head, Serenity gazed at the scenery outside the window.
As they approached Bright Boulevard, she decided to call her sister. Serenity felt relieved when her sister answered the phone.
“Liberty, are you and Sonny awake? I made a lot of sandwiches, so I brought some for you both.”
Liberty paused her walk and glanced at her son in the stroller. “Sonny isn’t awake yet. Seren, I’m not at home. I took Sonny for a stroll and somehow ended up near your bookshop. I’ll just head to your shop instead of going back home.”
“Oh, I see. Where are you now? Can you send me your location? We can pick you and Sonny up and then head to the shop.”
“Sure.”
Liberty was feeling tired from the long walk.
Being on the heavier side made her feet ache more as she continued walking.
She sent her location to Serenity.
After receiving her sister’s location, Serenity informed Zachary, “My sister isn’t at home, Mr. York. She’s on her way to my shop. Can you go there? We can pick her and Sonny up before heading to the shop.”
“Sure.”
Zachary glanced at the location on Serenity’s phone, made a U-turn, and changed course.
Liberty thought she had walked quite a distance, so she expected Zachary to arrive shortly. It would take approximately ten minutes to reach her location.
Holding onto the stroller, Liberty waited by the road.
“Liberty.”
With…
As the car came to a stop, Serenity exited the vehicle and approached her sister.
“Ant Swer.”
Sonny, looking a bit drowsy from just waking up, brightened at the sight of his aunt. He stretched out his arms, signaling for Serenity to pick him up.
“Sonny.”
Serenity lifted her nephew and said to her sister, “Get into the car, Liberty.”
Zachary stepped out to help fold the stroller before loading it into the car. He waited for the sisters to get settled in the backseat before taking his place as the driver and starting the engine.
“Are you hungry, Sonny?” Serenity asked, not rushing to inquire about her sister’s plans. Although Sonny was only two years old, he could pick up on snippets of adult conversations, and Serenity wanted to shield him from the news of Hank’s affair.
After all, Hank was Sonny’s father. No matter his mistakes, it was inappropriate to speak ill of him in front of a child.
“Hungry.”
Sonny rubbed his belly. “I brought formula.”
Liberty added, “It’s not easy to feed him milk in the car. I’ll wait until we get to the shop to give him his bottle.”
“Would you prefer milk or a sandwich?” Serenity asked her little nephew.
“I want sandwichy.”
With a smile, Serenity kissed Sonny on the cheek and replied, “Okay. I’ll get you a sandwich when we’re at my shop. It’s your favorite cheese sandwich.”
“Sure.” As Sonny had only just woken up, he could wait a little longer for food.
Holding Sonny’s head against her chest, Serenity felt a wave of compassion for him.
