Chapter 11
Niall struggled and snarled, but against a six-foot-two grown man, he was like a flailing chick. He still wouldn’t shut his mouth, though. “You’re an ugly loser!”
William snorted drily. “What kind of backwards school are you attending? They’re teaching you such terrible taste.”
He stripped the water gun from Niall’s grip and weighed it in his hand. It was surprisingly heavy. He casually tossed it toward Scarlet. “Here. Have some fun.”
Scarlet caught the oversized plastic gun, stunned.
She didn’t understand what she was supposed to do with it.
When Brett heard William repeatedly refer to Scarlet as his wife, he finally realized Niall had provoked the one person they couldn’t afford to cross. He scrambled over, desperate to apologize.
“You little brat! What do you think you’re doing? Get over here right now!”
He reached out to grab Niall, but William’s cold gaze flickered up, freezing him in his tracks.
“If you don’t know how to discipline your child, stand back and watch,” William said.
William looked back at the kid. “What’s your name?”
“I’m your daddy!” Niall screamed.
William looked completely unfazed. “Oh, ‘Your Daddy.’ That’s a bold choice. Your father must have been very proud of himself when he came up with that name for you.”
Next to William, Brett’s face turned a sickly shade of green as he chided, “Watch your mouth! Show some respect to Mr. Cooper!”
“What am I even expecting from such an obnoxious kid?” William muttered.
Then, he added in a slow tone, “Actually, kid, you’re lucky today. You don’t get to meet someone as helpful as me all the time. Since your dad clearly skipped the part about manners, I’m in a good mood to teach you.”
Without warning, William grabbed Niall by the collar and flipped him upside down. Then, he held onto his ankle with one hand and dangled him over the pool.
Brett yelled anxiously, “He’s just a kid! He thought your wife was pretty and wanted to play. He didn’t mean any harm!”
“Don’t worry,” William said. “His perspective is a little warped. I’m just helping him straighten it out.”
Niall, hanging head-first over the water, began to thrash and shriek, “Let me down, you freak! I’ll kill you!”
William clicked his tongue. “Did your parents forget to teach you how to brush your teeth? Your mouth is filthy. Let’s wash it out.”
With that, he dipped Niall into the pool.
Niall’s head submerged for a split second before William pulled him back up. His defiant face was now deathly pale, and he burst into hysterical sobs.
Brett was torn between heartbreak for his son and the urge to strangle the little idiot himself. Of all the people, Niall just had to offend the Coopers. His company was struggling, and he was currently praying for a loan from Heritage Bank to stay afloat.
“Apologize to Mr. Cooper right now!” Brett demanded.
“No!” Niall was spoiled rotten and as stubborn as a mule. Between sobs, he continued to hurl incoherent insults and profanity.

“Your mouth is still filthy! I’ll help clean it again,” William said.
As he began to dunk Niall again, Brett quickly begged, “Mr. Cooper, it’s my fault for not raising him right! Please, would you forgive him?”
Scarlet stood by, stunned by William’s brutal yet efficient methods.
The commotion by the pool quickly drew the attention of the guests inside. A crowd hurried over, and from a distance, all they saw was William dangling a crying child over the pool while Scarlet stood next to him holding the water gun.
To anyone watching, it looked exactly like a powerful couple teaming up to bully a small child.
“Oh my God, what is happening?”
Scarlet snapped out of her daze and quickly grabbed William’s sleeve, trying to get him to lower the boy. When she sought revenge, she usually did it quietly, in the shadows, never anything as blatant as this.
They were at a private party, and if this were to turn into a scandal, it would reflect poorly on the Thompson family. Not to
mention, Justine would undoubtedly blame her for not reining William in.
As she walked over, William wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her to his side as he muttered, “Stay back.”
Niall’s mother arrived a second later, wailing as she rushed forward. Brett caught her just in time.
“He’s going to kill him! Someone save my son!” Niall’s mother shouted.
The crowd erupted into a chorus of frantic advice. “Mr. Cooper, you’re an adult! Why are you picking on a child?”
“Exactly! Just talk to him. There’s no need for this!”
Justine’s face was thunderous. “William, what do you think you’re doing?”
William raised an eyebrow, looking completely unbothered as he gave Niall a little shake. “Can’t you tell? I’m performing a public service.”
Seeing that even Justine couldn’t stop him, the parents turned to John. “Mr. Thompson Senior, please! You have to do something!”
John shot William a look of annoyance. He was an adult, and yet he was picking on a kid right in front of everybody.
John kept his face stern. “William, he’s just a child. It doesn’t matter what he did. You have to put him down.”
William gave a roguish, reckless smirk. “I’m just a kid, too. We’re just two kids playing around. There’s no need for you to get involved. Just sit back and enjoy the show. The pool deck is slippery. Considering your age, we wouldn’t want you to fall in.”
That was William. Years ago, he had been a total nightmare, and no one on earth could control him. Now that he was older, he looked mature and composed, but he was still the same arrogant jerk.
Brett yelled at his son in desperation, “Apologize! Just apologize, and he will let you go.”
Niall, realizing that no one here could save him, finally broke down.
Tears and snot streamed down his face as he apologized, “I’m sorry, Mr. Cooper!”
“I’m a bit hard of hearing,” William said lazily. “Who are you apologizing to?”
Niall immediately corrected himself. “I’m sorry, ma’am!”
“Ma’am? My wife is a young lady. Why are you calling her ‘Ma’am’ like she’s old?” William questioned unacceptably.
Scarlet wanted to point out that she was nearly 26. It was perfectly appropriate to call her ma’am.
“I’m sorry, miss! I was wrong. Please, forgive me!”

“Wrong about what?” William pressed.
“I shouldn’t have sprayed you with water just because you’re pretty!” Niall was now the picture of obedience, hanging onto William’s every word. “I’ll never do it again!”
“Again? Next time you see me, you’d better run as fast as you can with your tiny legs. Otherwise, I’ll toss you in this pool, and I won’t let you out until you’ve drunk it dry. Got it?” William warned.
“I promise! I’ll never do it again!” Niall cried.
William finally hauled Niall back onto solid ground. His mother immediately lunged forward and pulled him into a frantic hug.
William idly rubbed his wrist. “What have you been feeding him? The kid is way too heavy.”
Now that her son was safe, her courage returned. She rounded on William like a madwoman. “A grown man bullying a child! Have you no shame?!”
William let out a soft hum and shoved his hands into his pockets. “So what if I bullied him? Don’t like it? If you want to stand up for him, feel free to try dangling me over the water. I promise I won’t even fight back. Do you want to give it a go?”
